I am very sorry that it has been two month's since I have posted any entries on here. In retrospect, I believe it was a bit unrealistic to think that I could continue with the podcast at another location, in another person's home, while at the same time, sharing a computer. Between family, friends and viewing Chile, the time flew by and the podcasts never happened.

I hope you can understand and that we can move forward from here. I am home once again and I learned a lot of Spanish while in Chile so let's start again!

For now here is a little Spanish lesson.

Un/Una y Uno

The usage of these three words are often confused and misused by those new to the Spanish language.

Uno is used like the number one.

It can be used as follows:

Cuantos libros quiere?

How many books would you like?

You can reply, Uno.

One.

This is a short answer to the question.

But, never say Uno Libro.

One Book

You only use Uno when giving short answers.

Not with words like:

libro (book)

You should say un Libro, por favor.

One book please.

With words you would use un/ una for telling how many objects you want.

Un for masculine.

Una for feminine.

For feminine nouns you would use una.

For masculine nouns you would use un.

Examples:

Tengo Una pelota.

I have one ball.

Tengo un libro.

I have one book.

Surround yourself with the language

To get familiar with the Spanish language and its usage, it is a good idea to surround yourself with the language as much as possible. At first it will be difficult to understand but as you learn more you will feel a sense of pride as you begin to recognize words and phrases and comprehend them. Also, it trains your ear when you listen to Spanish spoken on television or radio so you can hear Spanish spoken naturally which is how you will encounter it .

So get started! The earlier you start surrounding yourself, the better!

This is a new blog to help others and myself while learning the Spanish language. Some entries will be in Spanish and others in English.

Learning Tip #1:

Make flashcards with sentences and words that you are learning. Use different colors for example for English (or your native language) and Spanish. Perhaps even different colors for words and sentences. Then play match and regularly practice with these flashcards.
