To get familiar with the Spanish language and its usage, it is a good idea to surround yourself with the language as much as possible. At first it will be difficult to understand but as you learn more you will feel a sense of pride as you begin to recognize words and phrases and comprehend them. Also, it trains your ear when you listen to Spanish spoken on television or radio so you can hear Spanish spoken naturally which is how you will encounter it .
So get started! The earlier you start surrounding yourself, the better!
Here are a few sources I have used in doing this:
Leer un periodico BBC en Espanol
Read the BBC newspaper in Spanish
http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/spanish/news/
Escuchar clases de Espanol en Podcast
Listen to Spanish classes on Podcast
http://coffeebreakspanish.typepad.com/
Leer lenguajes Indo-europeos
Read Indo-European Languages
http://ielanguages.com/spanish.html
Escuchar Guia del Lenguaje
Listen to Language Guide

Good Luck and stay tuned. Soon I will be adding short audio lessons. My first one will feature the Spanish alphabet and its pronunciation.
